Utilizing statistical modeling, the American Cancer Society published a challenge goal report to decrease cancer mortality by 40 percent between the years 2015 and 2035. The authors of the challenge goal report based their figures on multiple estimates. They first determined how quickly overall cancer death rates diminished between 2001 and 2015 among the general U.S. population and Americans with college educations. Of these figures, they applied the faster reduction rate to the entire U.S. population starting in 2020, and this showed a potential death rate drop of 38.3 percent by 2035.
Additionally, the authors propose a method the American public and medical system can implement to try to achieve the challenge goal:
1. By 2025, the rates for major cancer risk factors, such as excess body weight, smoking, and alcohol intake, must be reduced to the levels currently recorded among college graduates.
2. By 2030, the rates of breast cancer and colorectal screening must also reach the levels of college graduates.
3. Risk factor screening and prevalence rates must be better optimized.
If all of the above were achieved, overall cancer death rates in the U.S. would drop by 33.5 percent by 2035. Additionally, the complete goals report includes specific methods for decreasing cancer death rates related to lung, prostate, breast, and colorectum cancers.
